Irish Crochet: 3rd Floweret

A two piece floweret where you crochet the petals (or leaves) separate from the central ring and then hook them together to attain the final product.  This floweret was designed with two larger petals on one side and 3 smaller ones on the other giving it a slightly lopsided appearance which also happens to play with its overall perspective.

Materials:

  • Metal Ring (8 mm)
  • Yarn (Lace (0) weight)
  • Cotton Cord
  • U.S. size 7 (1.65 mm) Crochet Hook

Instructions:

To create the Leaves or Petals:

  1. For the small leaves – over a single cord foundation:
    1. *Sc 12.
    2. Ch 1 to turn.
    3. Without the cord: Sc 10 into both horizontal St loops for each Sp.  Sk the 2 Sp at the base of the Row.
    4. Ch 1 to turn.
    5. Sc 10 into each St in the previous Row.
    6. Ch 1 to turn.
    7. Over the cord foundation: Sc 10 into each St in the previous row, and Sc 2 into the 2 St left open at the base of the last Row.
    8. Ch 2 to turn, and begin the next leaf.*
  2. Repeat the * sequence until you have three small leaves all linked together.
  3. For the two large leaves – over a single cord foundation:
    1. *Sc 16.
    2. Ch 3 to turn.
    3. Without the cord: Tr 12 into both horizontal St loops for each Sp. hTr 1. Sc 1. Sk the 2 Sp at the base of the Row.
    4. Ch 1 to turn.
    5. Sc 1. hTr 1. Tr 12.
    6. Ch 1 to turn.
    7. Over the cord foundation: Sc 14 on the St from the previous Row, and Sc 2 into the 2 St left open at the base of the last Row.
    8. Ch 2 to turn work*, and begin the next leaf.
    9. Repeat the * sequence until you have two large leaves linked together along with the three smaller leaves.
    10. Sl st the final leaf into the base of the first leaf creating a ring of leaves.

To create the Central Ring:

Crochet over the metal ring Sc 20, and Sl St ends together.  I used the metal ring in place of a triple cord foundation, but you can use a triple cord instead.

  1. Ch 2. * Dc 2 into a single St Sp. P 1. Sk 1 Sp.*  Repeat sequence until the Rnd is complete.  Sl St the ends of the Rnd together.
  2. Draw your yarn to the backside of the ring and hook it into the front side of the petals (leaves). Draw the yarn through and continue to connect the two pieces together.
