The Art of the Kale Shake

Why take multi vitamins throughout the summer months when you can sit down and drink a refreshingly sweet and tangy kale shake?  My sister and I have been experimenting with kale shakes for several years now, and we have come up with a formula of three basic ingredients that seem to be the key to kale shake success: kale – because you can not have a kale shake without it, orange juice – for additional liquid and to naturally sweeten the shake, and a banana – to smooth things out and soften the sharper kale flavors.

Ingredients:

  • IMG_1848Blanched Kale: I blanch a large batch of kale, and then freeze it into individual kale shake portions.  I will freeze the kale on cookie sheets, and and then, once the kale is frozen, I transfer it into a large ziplock bag.  That way it will not freeze into a large kale brick, trust me, it has happened to me before.  If your kale is tender enough or you are using baby kale you can place it directly into the shake without blanching it.
  • 1/2 – 1 cup Orange Juice
  • 1 Banana
  • Other Fruit of Choice:  I tend to use frozen fruit in my kale shakes so that the shake will stay cold and I do not have to add ice which will water it down.  A few frozen fruit favorites, that I like to add to my shakes, are blueberries (as in the picture of the purple colored shake, they are also a good source of antioxidants), pineapple and coconut for something a little bit tropical, or strawberries.

Directions:

  1. Blend everything together in a blender until smooth.  Nice and simple.
